Youth Voices on July 4th: Embracing an Inclusive America

As fireworks light up the sky and the nation commemorates its independence, the 4th of July serves as a poignant reminder of America's founding ideals. For today's youth, this celebration is not just about remembering the past, but also about envisioning the future of the country they will inherit and shape. The younger generation is increasingly vocal about their aspirations for an America that is open, inclusive, and true to the ideals of freedom and equality espoused by the nation's founders.

A Vision of Inclusivity and Acceptance

For many young Americans, the 4th of July is an opportunity to reflect on the country's commitment to being a sanctuary for those fleeing persecution. The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of hope and freedom, stands as a testament to America's historical promise to welcome the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free." Today's youth are eager to see this promise renewed and expanded in contemporary policies and societal attitudes.

Future Generations Want a More Inclusive Democracy

Young people envision a future where democracy and inclusivity go hand in hand. They believe that a truly democratic society is one that embraces diversity and extends a helping hand to those in need, including refugees. The younger generation sees inclusivity as a cornerstone of democracy, essential for building a fair and just society.

For many people of my generation, including myself as a young American woman from the diverse state of New Mexico, celebrating the Fourth of July is a mixed experience. Many people have opinions about the treatment of incoming immigrants in modern America, often tinged with nativism and xenophobia. This trend of nationalism for those already here excludes newcomers, yet I cannot help but notice this is the most anti-American sentiment.

I, along with many of my friends and other Americans, am directly descended from Northwestern Europeans who left their homes due to systematic oppression, political conflict, and religious persecution - a commonality shared with refugees today. This history makes it clear: America was built by and for those seeking the promise of freedom, equality, and opportunity - a better life. All of us are descended from or related to someone who has had to move due to larger forces than themselves, yet modern attitudes still push newcomers to the side.

In my own experience, I've seen how embracing diversity and inclusion can transform communities. So, despite these frustrations, I envision a future where democracy and inclusivity are intertwined, where diversity is celebrated, and the nation fulfills its promise of freedom and equality.

Embracing Diversity

The youth of today recognize the strength that comes from diversity. They see America's multicultural fabric as one of its greatest assets and are committed to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their background, can thrive.

Growing up in New Mexico, I witnessed the systemic inequality faced by immigrants. I joined Back Humanity to help those in need of homes, communities and livelihoods. No one deserves to be displaced and everyone deserves systems that effectively implement adequate help. By supporting displaced people and promoting inclusivity and justice, we can create a future where America lives up to its ideals, becoming more powerful and united through our shared commitment to diversity and equality.

Championing Equality and Justice

Alongside inclusivity, young Americans are passionate about equality and justice. They believe that the true spirit of the 4th of July is reflected in the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice. They are advocating for systemic changes that ensure all Americans can enjoy the freedoms promised in the Declaration of Independence. This commitment to justice and equality aligns perfectly with the mission of Back Humanity.

Back Humanity aims to improve the lives of displaced individuals by addressing systemic issues that hinder their access to safe homes and livelihoods. In creating a digital nation that provides essential identity, legal, employment and banking services, we can make a real difference in the lives of displaced people.

The Road Ahead

As the nation celebrates its independence, it is clear that the youth are not just passively observing but actively shaping America's future. Their perspectives are rooted in a deep sense of responsibility to uphold the nation's founding ideals while pushing for progress and inclusivity.

Back Humanity has direct experience with the immigration experience and the issues and dangers displaced peoples face. We know how to bring meaningful change to those seeking safety and opportunity.

This 4th of July, as we reflect on our nation's history, it is imperative to listen to the voices of the youth. Their vision of an open, inclusive, and just America echoes the hopes and dreams of the founders and provides a beacon of hope for the future. By embracing these perspectives, we can ensure that the ideals of freedom and equality continue to flourish in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
